Westwinds Beach Camp
During Spring Break, we took the opportunity on a good-weather day to get in some adventure. After having recently pulled out all our camping gear to clean, we loaded some of it up into the van. The original plan of Smith Rock would have been a little too far out by the time we left, so the coast was decided on instead, and we made our way to Westwinds at Sandlake, a parking lot with easy access to the dunes.
We hiked across the flats and decided on a narrow sandy spot between two berms that had a good view of the ocean, dug it out enough to fit the tent and got a fire going (after losing and finding the matches).
Upon waking up, the boys made their way to the ocean and fought the waves on a driftwood pirate ship while dad cleaned and packed up the gear. On the drive home, we passed but then turned around to visit the Tillamook Forestry Center, which was surprisingly detailed and a volunteer graciously expounded on the history of the fires that hit the region successively 4 times every 6 years and had to be replanted by hand. We climbed the lookout tower and made our way home.
